Loyola upsets Miami on last second shot ; Rhode Island ends Oklahoma’s season

Dallas ~ The Loyola Ramblers have shocked the Miami Hurricanes and have advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. Loyola came from behind and win their first NCAA Tournament Game since 1985, 64-62.

With three seconds left junior Marques Towns passed to senior Donte Ingram, who sank a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left to give Loyola a two point lead. It was initially thought to have beaten the buzzer and ended the game, but the officials looked back on the replay and found out that there was still 0.3 seconds left on the clock.

Miami quickly called a timeout, and drew up a play, but a lob by a Hurricane down the court was unsuccessful and the Ramblers had won.

Ingram, who hit the game’s decisive shot, said that Loyola isn’t done. And even though this is their first appearance in the Big Dance in 30 years, were not just happy getting in.

“We’re far from content,” he said. “We’re not happy to just be here. Just like any other team, we want to compete, and we want to win games. I think that this team is very capable of that. And just going forward, that’s all we’re focusing on. We’re not looking at it like, ‘Oh, we are here now, and that’s the end of the road for us.’ We want to do what we can do to go in here and get wins.”

Loyola went into halftime all tied up after the Hurricanes had a buzzer beater of their own. In the first half, Loyola had a seven point lead at one point, and shot 52 percent from the field. 260-pound freshman center, Cameron Klutwig scored eight first half points to help carry the load for the Ramblers. However, he was limited to only one point in the second half.

To start off the second half, Miami had the momentum, after erasing Loyola’s lead, and it didn’t look like they were going anywhere. The Hurricanes took advantage of Loyola’s uncharacteristically sloppy defense.

Miami led by seven, but with a minute left, Clayton Custer tied the game at 60.

 

Kansas City ~ Trae Young and the Oklahoma Sooners season has come to and end. Oklahoma lost to the Rhode Island Rams 83-78 in overtime this afternoon.

Young did practically everything he could do, scoring 28 points, including two free throws in crunch tie to send the game into OT. Young finished with 28 points, seven assists, and five rebounds, but today ended like it usually has these past two months – the rest of his team couldn’t help him out. Jamuni McNeace, a junior forward, scored 14 points and 10 rebounds. Him and Young were the only Sooners to score in double-digits.

Being down by four at half, Rhode Island clawed its way into the lead by scoring timely three-pointers. The Rams even led by seven before Young dominated late.
