Brew Crew wins series vs Padres

Milwaukee, W.I. ~  The Milwaukee Brewers played host to the San Diego Padres over Fathers Day weekend and the two teams produced some pretty exciting games with lots of homeruns. The series featured a walk-off homerun by Eric Thames on Friday night, two homers for San Diego in the top of the 11th on Saturday, and a complete game by Jimmy Nelson on Sunday.

On Friday night for the second consecutive night Eric Thames won the game on a clutch late inning homerun. Thursday night Thames hit a two-run shot in the top of the 9th in St. Louis. Well, on Friday he hit a walkoff off the top of the wall in left center to give Milwaukee the win.

Junior Guerra was on the mound for the Brew Crew and he got off to a rough start in the first inning allowing 4 runs. Guerra has not been the same since last season as he has lost 3-4 miles per hour on his fastball and he just cannot locate his splitter. An error in center by Keon Broxton, a walk, and homeruns by Wil Myers and Hunter Renfroe scored the Padres first four runs.

Guerra calmed down though as he worked threw the sixth inning withought giving up a run or a hit. Guerra walked three batters, hit one, and struck out three batters, giving the Brewers a good chance to come back.

The Brewers indeed did come back. Travis Shaw homered in the second inning off the center field scoreboard but Padres starter Miguel Diaz remained cool until the fourth inning. Domingo Santana led off with a walk followed by Travis Shaw’s fielders choice. A single by Manny Pina  and a three run homer by Broxton tied the game at 4 a piece. Outfileder Lewis Brinson then hit a triple and Diaz’s night was done. Orlando Arcia then hit a grounder up the middle but reliever Craig Stamen got the ball and fielded it. The game was kept tied until the top of the 8th when Yangervis Solarte hit a solo shot off of Jacob Barnes. But quickly after, Pina sent a longballl to the bleachers in left to tie it at 5.

Corey Knebel pitched a scoreless ninth and tenth, setting the stage for Thames. Leading off in the bottom of the 10th Thames sent a 1-1 pitch over the wall for a Brewers win.

On Saturday the Brewers were on a four game winning streak and they were trying to make it five on Saturday with Chase Anderson on the mound vs. the Padres. Although he gave up two homeruns, Anderson pitched seven pretty good innings allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

the Brewers bats got started in the third when Orlando Arcia led things off with an inside the park homerun. It bounced off the wall in center field and kicked back to left and by the time the Padre outfielders threw it in Arcia had already made it all the way  around the bases.

Then later in the inning Eric Thames hit a two run homer to give the Crew the lead 3-1.

After Anderson was taken out after seven innings Jared Hughes and Corey Knebel each pitched scoreless frames in the 8th and 9th to take the game to extras. Then manager Craig Counsell put struggling reliever Carlos Torres in the game. Predictably so, after walking Wil Meyers Torres allowed a two-run shot by Yangervis Solarte.

But the Brewers hadn’t given up yet. San Diego broght in Brandon Maurer in to the game only to have Keon Broxton send a two-run homerun over the fence.

But in the 11th Oliver Drake distributed two San Diego homeruns and the Padres won 7-5.

On Fathers Day the Brewers won large in part because of Jimmy Nelson, who pitched a complete game. Nelson gave up six hits, one run while walking two and striking out 10.

The Brewers had tons of chances to score in the early innings but just couldn’t capitalize as they stranded runners in scoring positions in 4 of the first 5 innings. Then came the sixth. Hernan Perez led off the sixth with a homerun and Manny Pina also hit the longball two batters later.
